OpenAI is Developing a Social Network with Biometric Verification
OpenAI is working on a social network platform that will only include real people, aiming to fundamentally solve the bot problem. Biometric methods are being considered for verifying user identities on the platform.
Aiming for a Platform Exclusive to Humans
AI giant OpenAI is preparing to step into the social media world. According to a report by Forbes, the company is developing a social network platform that aims to fundamentally solve the problems caused by bot accounts and will only allow real humans to participate. The project is still in its early stages and is being run by a small team.
Biometric "Proof of Personhood" Proposal
The platform's most notable feature could be its user authentication method. Sources close to the matter state that the OpenAI team is considering asking users for "proof of personhood" via biometric methods like Apple's Face ID or Worldcoin's iris-scanning orb (World Orb). This type of verification aims to guarantee that there is a real person behind every account.
However, this approach is being met with concern by privacy advocates. Warnings are being issued about the risks posed by immutable biometric data falling into the wrong hands. The Worldcoin project, operated by Tools for Humanity, a company co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, also uses a similar iris-scanning technology.
A Response to the Bot Problem on Platform X
OpenAI's initiative is seen as a response to the chronic bot problem on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). It is known that bot activity has increased after Elon Musk purchased the platform and significantly downsized its security and moderation teams. Altman, as an X user, has previously shared his discomfort with the increase in AI-managed accounts on the platform.
It is also among the claims that OpenAI plans to allow users to generate content with AI within the platform. This is a feature already offered on Meta's Instagram. However, there is no clear timeline for when OpenAI's social network will be launched, and it is stated that the project could change significantly before being made public.
Entering a Challenging Market
If OpenAI, which has managed to impress the masses with applications like ChatGPT and Sora, enters the social network market, it will face a tough battle. The platform will need to compete with both established and rising rivals like Meta's Threads, Bluesky, and TikTok. Furthermore, increasing security concerns regarding AI assistants also raise questions about the reliability of such a platform.
The tech world is eagerly waiting to see if the company can bring this ambitious project to life with an innovative approach, similar to the AI solutions it offers for complex systems. No comment could be obtained from OpenAI regarding the matter.
