Fourteen fake 'skills' uploaded to the platform's official skill store, ClawHub, last month attempted to trap users and install malware on their systems. These malicious skills, which specifically targeted cryptocurrency users, have exposed the new generation of threats facing open-source AI platforms.
OpenClaw is known as a free, open-source, autonomous AI agent developed by Peter Steinberger, previously known under the names Clawdbot and Moltbot. The platform serves as a personal AI assistant that users can run on their own devices, operating through popular messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Google Chat, Signal, iMessage, and Microsoft Teams.
Crypto Users Specifically Targeted
According to researcher findings, the malicious skills specifically targeted users interested in the cryptocurrency market. The fake skills attempted to get users to install them by promising attractive services such as crypto price analysis, arbitrage opportunities, and automated trading bots. However, behind these capabilities lay harmful code designed to infiltrate users' devices and steal their financial information.
OpenClaw's installation process is quite simple: users can quickly set up the system using one-line installation commands, package managers, or source compilation options. The platform, which supports macOS, Linux, and Windows operating systems, appeals even to users with limited technical knowledge through its 5-minute setup guide. However, this easy accessibility appears to have created an opportunity window for malicious actors as well.
