Google Search's AI Mode Allows Follow-up Questions from AI Summaries
Google is improving the transition between AI Overviews in Search and AI Mode. Users can now ask follow-up questions while preserving context through an AI Overview.
Tech giant Google has taken a significant step to make the search experience more dialogue-based. The company is gradually removing the transition between the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Overviews it provides in search results and the full-fledged AI Mode. Now, users can ask follow-up questions and deepen their queries on the same page without losing context after an AI Overview is displayed.
A Seamless Chat Experience
The new flow aims to overcome the limitation of being confined to a one-time summary. The user starts with an AI Overview powered by Gemini 3, then can ask their next question on the same results page and continue the conversation in AI Mode without re-entering the core context. Google states that in its tests, users preferred results that could naturally transition into a conversation.
This update aims to bridge the gap between quick information searches and deeper research. Google emphasizes that Search should still be perfect for instant queries like scores or weather, but it also wants to address longer, more complex questions that don't fit into a single answer. In practice, the results page begins to behave like a session; first, a summary is presented, then new follow-up queries can be made as the question evolves, staying grounded in the same foundation.
Focus on Mobile Users and Points to Note
Google announced that the feature to transition from AI Overviews to AI Mode has been launched globally on mobile devices. This is significant because it's the platform where re-entering context is most annoying and a more fluid follow-up flow can save time. The company recommends users use AI Overviews as a starting point, switch to AI Mode when more depth is needed, and use the links that appear on the page when accuracy is critical.
Users need to be cautious about availability. Google did not share a timeline for this update based on country, language, or account type. Therefore, the new experience is expected to be rolled out gradually. Google's move in the AI-focused search market could further intensify competition in the sector. A similar approach is reminiscent of the dynamics discussed in the news titled Ad Tests and Company Dramas in the AI Sector.
Increasing Competition in the Market
Google's move is seen as part of its strategy to keep users on the platform and personalize the search experience. This is a development in line with the company's other AI products, such as the subscription service announced in the news Google AI Plus Launches in the US: Price and Offerings and Google's NotebookLM: A Practical AI Assistant That Works With Your Own Resources. Competing firms are also developing similar tools, trying to redefine how users access information. While AI integration is gaining momentum in the finance sector, the news Capital One Acquires AI-Focused Financial Platform Brex for $5.15 Billion serves as an example of major investments in this direction.
