Experimental World Model Opens to Wider Audience

Tech giant Google has taken a significant step in AI research by releasing its experimental prototype 'Genie 3' from limited access. The system can now be used by users aged 18 and over who have Google's premium subscription plan, Google AI Ultra.

Creating Game Worlds with Text

Genie 3 is described as a 'general-purpose world model' that allows users to create explorable, dynamic 3D environments using simple text commands. The system's promotional videos give the feeling of instantly creating a video game. It is reported that this development has led to a decline in the stock values of some video game companies.

The functions of Genie 3, which is supported by Google's other AI models like Gemini, Nano Banana Pro, and Veo 3, are grouped under three main headings:

  • World Drafting: A character and the world they will explore can be designed using text commands and uploaded images. The character's movement style, such as walking or flying, and a first-person or third-person perspective can be selected.
  • World Exploration: In the created world, the path is shaped in real-time based on the user's interactions and movements. The camera angle and view can also be adjusted during navigation.
  • World Remixing: Users can select pre-created worlds and build upon them to create new versions. The system includes a curated world gallery to choose from. It is also possible to download videos from explorations.

Early-Stage Limitations and Future Plans

Google acknowledges that Genie 3 is still an early experimental version and has some limitations. It is stated that the created worlds may not appear fully realistic or may not perfectly adhere to user commands. It is mentioned that controlling some characters might be more difficult or delays might occur. Additionally, creations are currently limited to 60 seconds.

The company plans to expand Project Genie's access to more regions 'when the time comes'. For now, users who are not Google AI Ultra subscribers or not part of the Trusted Tester Program will have to wait to use the experience. This move is evaluated as the first concrete step in Google's AI initiatives in the game design field towards becoming a commercial product.
