Google Unveils 'Gemini Labs' for Experimental Features on Web

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – Google is enhancing its Gemini AI platform with a significant organizational overhaul, introducing a dedicated "Gemini Labs" section within the web application. This move aims to provide users with a clear gateway to experimental features, differentiating them from the core, stable functionalities of the AI tool.

The introduction of Gemini Labs follows a pattern established by other Google services, such as Search Labs, which have historically served as testing grounds for unreleased or in-development features. As reported by Android Authority and 9to5Google, the new Labs section is visually marked with the familiar Google beaker icon and is integrated into Gemini's existing Tools menu on the web interface (gemini.google.com).

Previously, the Tools menu presented a single, extended list of available features. The reorganization now divides this menu into two distinct categories: "Tools," which houses established functionalities like Deep Research, Create videos, and Create images, and "Experimental features," clearly labeled as "Labs." This separation is intended to offer users a more transparent understanding of what is considered a finalized product and what is still undergoing active development and testing.

Among the experimental features now accessible through Gemini Labs are Agent, Dynamic view (or Visual layout), and a new "Personalize Intelligence" toggle. According to 9to5Google, the Agent feature is available for users with an AI Ultra subscription, while Dynamic view and Visual layout are accessible to all users. The "Personalize Intelligence" option, available to paid users, allows Gemini to optionally draw context from connected Google apps to enhance chat personalization. This setting is enabled by default and applies only to the current conversation, requiring users to opt out of personalization if they choose.

Android Authority notes that the "Personalize Intelligence" setting defaults to being active, meaning users must actively disable it if they prefer Gemini not to leverage context from their connected Google applications. This control is designed to offer users more granular command over their AI interactions and data usage. The toggle is conversation-specific and automatically resets when a new chat session begins.

The rollout of Gemini Labs and its associated experimental features is currently exclusive to the Gemini web app. As of the reports, these updates have not yet been extended to the mobile clients.
