Tech giant Google is taking a step to make it easier for users to switch between different platforms with a new feature coming to its AI assistant, Gemini. The feature, called 'Import AI Chats', will allow users to transfer their conversation history from rival AI services like ChatGPT or Claude to Gemini.

Breaking the Ecosystem Lock-in

AI assistants are transforming how users search, learn, and work. Over time, these platforms build context based on user preferences and past chats. This accumulated chat history and memory essentially 'locks' users into their current platform, becoming a factor that makes switching to another service difficult. The new tool developed by Google aims to remove this barrier.

How Will It Work?

The feature's working principle will be quite simple. Users will download their chat history from their current AI platform as a file. Then, they will be able to import it by uploading this file to the system via the 'Add File' menu on the Gemini app screen. According to screenshots from the testing phase, the feature is already available with a 'Beta' label. However, it's noted that users will not be able to transfer the 'memories' they have saved between platforms using this tool.

This move is seen as a reflection of the increasing competition in the AI assistant market. Reducing user switching costs is becoming a critical strategy for platforms to expand their user base. A similar approach had been seen in tools that facilitate data transfer between smartphone operating systems.

Improvement in Visual Quality

It is also reported that Google is working on an update for Gemini's image generation tool, Nano Banana Pro. This update will offer users the ability to download generated images with options like 'Recommended Size' for sharing or 'Maximum Size' (likely 4K resolution) for printing. For a tool that currently produces images at 2K resolution, this is considered a significant improvement, especially for professional use.

The company is also said to be in the early stages of developing a 'Likeness' tool that could help verify the originality of AI-generated video content. Such verification tools are thought to be a potential response to the security concerns that have come to the fore with the proliferation of AI assistants.

No official date has been shared for when the 'Import AI Chats' feature will be released for general use. However, its availability in the beta phase suggests the feature's official launch may not be far off.
