Developers blame platforms like GitHub for enabling automated, undiscerning contributions that lack technical integrity.

In a growing crisis within the open-source community, maintainers of the Godot game engine are struggling to manage an avalanche of low-quality, AI-generated pull requests (PRs) that have become "draining and demoralizing," according to Rémi Verschelde, a core contributor to the project. The flood of automated submissions—often riddled with incorrect syntax, irrelevant changes, or superficial edits—has overwhelmed volunteer maintainers tasked with reviewing and integrating legitimate contributions. The phenomenon is not isolated to Godot. As generative AI tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, and others become more accessible, developers with minimal coding experience are using them to generate code contributions without understanding the underlying architecture.
