The Promise of AI Coding and the Dream of Savings
Recently, the 'vibe coding' trend sweeping the software world has stood out with claims that artificial intelligence will completely transform the developer experience and especially reduce costs. An annual savings promise of around $1200 seemed like an attractive opportunity for many freelancers and small-scale developers. Following these promises, I decided to test a popular free AI coding assistant in my projects. My goal was to observe the promised annual savings as well as an increase in efficiency. However, the real experience was far from expectations.
What is Vibe Coding and Why is it So Popular?
Vibe coding essentially expresses the philosophy of integrating AI tools into coding, completion, debugging, and sometimes even design processes. The tools promise to take instructions given in natural language and convert them into code blocks or optimize existing code. This approach is marketed with the idea that it saves time, especially on routine tasks, allowing developers to focus on more creative work. Analyses predicting significant annual cost reductions make the trend even more attractive. However, these analyses are usually calculated based on ideal scenarios and flawless integration.
First Contact with the Free Tool and Rising Hopes
The free tool I started testing was quite promising at first. It gave quick answers for simple HTML/CSS edits or standard function suggestions. Its interface was modern and easy to use. The first few hours of experience created the feeling that 'pocketing $1200 annually is a piece of cake.' But things changed suddenly when I moved to a project requiring real-world complexity and unique business logic.
The Opposite of Promise: Chaos Requiring Constant Supervision

The Limits of the Free Model and Lack of Context
The root of the problems I experienced lies in the limited context window and general-purpose training of the AI models offered for free. These tools are far from deeply understanding a specific company's codebase, the special libraries it uses, or its development standards. While they can handle a clear definition like the dictionary meaning of the word 'annual' (as noted in sources, 'belonging to a year' or 'done every year'), they struggle to process dynamic and complex information like project specifications consistently. The result is an inefficient cycle that pushes the developer into a constant role of supervisor and corrector.
Lessons Learned and Realistic Expectations
This experience showed that especially free vibe coding tools are still far from being a mature and trouble-free developer assistant.
