Amazon's Alexa+ Goes Nationwide, Offering Free Text Chat
Amazon has officially launched its advanced AI assistant, Alexa+, across the United States. The service is available for a monthly fee, with a complimentary text-based version offered to non-Prime members.

Amazon Rolls Out Advanced AI Assistant Alexa+ Nationwide, Introduces Free Text Trial
SEATTLE, WA – Amazon's ambitious upgrade to its popular voice assistant, dubbed Alexa+, has now been made available to all users across the United States. The next-generation AI, which promises more complex and conversational interactions, comes with a monthly subscription fee, but Amazon is also offering a limited, free text-based version for those not subscribed to Amazon Prime.
For $20 per month, users can unlock the full capabilities of Alexa+, which has been in early access for some time. This rollout follows extensive user feedback gathered over the past year. Prime members, however, receive Alexa+ as a complimentary benefit, a strategic move by Amazon to enhance the value proposition of its Prime subscription, which itself costs $15 per month.
Existing Prime members can initiate the upgrade by simply saying, "Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+," or by visiting the dedicated Alexa website (alexa.com) and logging into their Amazon account. For non-Prime members, a taste of the new AI is available through a free, text-only chat feature on Alexa.com. While this free tier allows for questions and research, it comes with usage limitations, serving as a preview of the enhanced AI.
The enhanced Alexa+ boasts several new features designed to elevate user experience beyond its predecessor. These include more sophisticated agentic capabilities, enabling it to manage schedules more effectively, provide personalized recommendations, facilitate reservations, and offer more intuitive control over smart home devices. The system is designed to learn from user activity, aiming to deliver more relevant and useful responses over time.
This nationwide release comes after initial preview periods where early testers shared mixed reviews. As reported by Engadget in a prior preview, while the advanced capabilities of Alexa+ were noted for handling complex tasks, the overall experience was described as inconsistent and at times, "just incompetent enough to be annoying." The success of Alexa+ in meeting broader consumer expectations remains to be seen as it moves beyond early adopters.
Interestingly, the integration of Amazon's Alexa ecosystem extends to controlling other smart home devices and services. For instance, Google's own support documentation highlights that users can control YouTube on their TV using Amazon Alexa commands. Similarly, Google Nest products are compatible with Amazon Alexa, allowing for cross-platform control and integration, indicating a complex interoperability landscape in the smart home market.
The introduction of Alexa+ signifies Amazon's continued commitment to advancing its artificial intelligence offerings. By making the premium version a benefit for Prime members and offering a free, albeit limited, trial for others, Amazon aims to drive adoption and solidify its position in the competitive AI assistant market. The long-term impact of this enhanced AI on user engagement and broader smart home adoption will be closely watched.
